Bacterial biofilms often occur in porous media subject to flow, where they play pivotal roles in medicine, industry and the environment. The coexistence of multiple genotypes within these systems is routinely  observed, and of particular industrial importance, yet the mechanisms which modulate this maintenance of diversity have been largely ignored.

I am using a combination of microfluidic experiments and mathematical modelling to elucidate how flow through porous habitats dictates the coexistence of bacterial phenotypes within topologically complex environments.
